Document control and scope
Confirm that the document can be identified, traced and matched to the work that will actually happen.
- The document name, reference, revision, date and status are clear.
- The project, site, client, work area and planned dates are correct.
- The scope states what is included and excluded.
- Interfaces with other contractors, occupants, traffic, services and the public are addressed.
- Assumptions and information still awaiting confirmation are visible.
Risk assessment
Check that the assessment describes credible harm and controls the real exposure rather than relying on generic hazard labels.
- Significant hazards across setup, work, completion and foreseeable abnormal events are included.
- Everyone who could be harmed is considered, including contractors, visitors and the public where relevant.
- Existing and additional controls are specific, workable and assigned.
- Risk scores follow the organisation's defined matrix and do not replace judgement.
- High residual risk is escalated rather than hidden by optimistic scoring.
Method statement and supporting arrangements
Read the method as if you are preparing to supervise the job. Every important control should appear where it is used.
- The method is chronological and includes preparation, isolations, checks and demobilisation.
- Roles, competence, supervision and communication are named.
- Plant, tools, access equipment, lifting arrangements and inspections are specific enough.
- Permits, hold points, exclusion zones and coordination steps are clear.
- Emergency, rescue, spill, fire, first-aid, welfare and waste arrangements fit the site.
- Required COSHH assessments use current source evidence and the actual task conditions.
Final consistency check
Compare the scope, risk assessment, method, COSHH work and briefing information side by side. Resolve contradictions, missing responsibilities and controls that never appear in the sequence.
Confirm who is authorised to approve and issue the document, how affected workers will be briefed and acknowledged, and what conditions will trigger a stop and review.
